Italian municipalities are increasingly moving towards digitalisation, adopting the SPID digital identity and the electronic identity card to allow access to services, integrating the pagoPa platform for electronic payments and starting the migration of services to the IO application, to facilitate their use from smartphones.

In fact, 92% of Italian municipalities are pushing digital transformation. More specifically, 7,246 municipalities have applied for access to the Fund for Technological Innovation and Digitalisation to financially support the administrations in their modernisation processes.

Most of the requests for access to the Fund came from small municipalities with populations of less than 5,000 inhabitants, a clear sign of awareness of the importance of digitising services for citizens and businesses.

Larger cities also applied for access to the Fund's resources. The municipalities that have signed up to the public notice include Procida, Italian Capital of Culture 2022, and Matera, European Capital of Culture 2019.

The majority of municipalities, exactly 5,560, requested access to the Fund by adhering to the Public Notice promoted by the Department for Digital Transformation on December 15th 2020 and managed by PagoPa, in agreement with AgID and the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato (Ipzs).

The remaining 1,686 municipalities have access to the Fund, having signed specific regional agreements to implement the processes. The Regions of Emilia-Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Marche, Molise, Puglia, Veneto and the Autonomous Province of Trento have promoted initiatives to facilitate municipal administrations in their territories to adopt and integrate the Spid, pagoPa and AppIO enabling platforms.
